Biography
Louis Masai Michel explores the concept of human as animal through the painting of anthropomorphised creatures – adorning them with sentiment, attributes and paraphernalia of the modern world.
"In my humanimaltations I seek to challenge how the viewer tolerates his or her own bestial nature, alongside relating to the struggle for survival faced in the animal kingdom."
Not confined to gallery or canvas Masai often paints and pastes on the streets. As well as, when working at his studio on the edge of east London's Epping Forest, using a wide range of mark making instruments on reclaimed and found objects – from furniture to Victorian photographs.
Having spent six years curating and painting across the hinterland of Cornwall Louis decided enough was enough. Since moving to London at the start of 2010 and dedicating himself to art, he has been rewarded with more than 20 group shows, several curatorships and a solo show.
As a curator Louis focuses on the rise of street art and graffiti to galleries and the movement of fine art and illustration to street corners.
Always finding ways to interact with the audience Louis holds down a deejay residency at the Duke Of Edinburgh, Brixton.
